| The very first Memorial Day was observed on May 30, 1868. Originally it was called Decoration Day and became an Official Federal Holiday in 1971. It was established as a way for our country to set aside time for honoring and mourning military personnel who had given their lives in service to the United States.
* National Moment of Remembrance: At 3:00 p.m. local time on Memorial Day, all Americans are asked to pause for an extended moment of silence to reflect on the sacrifices made by fallen service members.
* Flag Display: U.S. flags should be flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon, and then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day.
* National Ceremonies: Major commemorative events take place nationwide, including the traditional wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery.
We hope you all have a safe Memorial Day. Take some time to honor and remember those who gave their lives defending our freedoms.
